tinyEmail vs MailerLite

Last updated December 21, 2023

tinyEmail Standard is cheaper than MailerLite for sending fewer than 100,000 emails a month, but becomes more expensive for larger subscriber numbers or more frequent emails, and lacks MailerLite’s email automation feature.

tinyEmail vs MailerLite: Pricing

When you send a relatively small number of emails each month, under 100,000, tinyEmail Standard (tier 1) is more affordable than MailerLite. You can see this clearly in several graphs at the end of the comparison. However, it’s important to note that tinyEmail gets pricier than MailerLite when you have a larger number of subscribers (over 100,000) and if you send more frequent newsletters, like weekly instead of monthly.

Another key point to consider, which isn’t about cost, is that MailerLite offers email automation, but tinyEmail does not. Therefore, if email automation is a crucial part of your email marketing strategy, tinyEmail might not be the best choice.

Pricing structure

When you compare MailerLite and tinyEmail for email marketing, it’s a bit tricky. MailerLite’s prices depend on how many subscribers you have. On the other hand, tinyEmail charges you based on how many emails you send out.

To make a fair comparison between MailerLite’s subscriber-focused pricing and tinyEmail’s email-count pricing, we need to think of a specific situation. We’ll talk more about this later in our comparison.

MailerLite Growing Business prices (tier 1)

Here’s a table that lists the prices of MailerLite’s Growing Business plan, which is their first level. It shows the monthly cost if you choose the annual plan, and you get a 10% discount with this option. The table also points out that the Growing Business plan allows up to 50,000 subscribers. If you go over that, you’ll need to move up to the Advanced tier.

MailerLite Advanced prices (tier 2)

Below is a table for MailerLite’s Advanced tier. Notice that once you have more than 500,000 subscribers, the pricing becomes custom, meaning you need to discuss with MailerLite to figure out your specific price. It’s also important to know that with MailerLite, you can send unlimited emails if you have up to 50,000 subscribers. However, if you have more than 50,000 subscribers, your monthly email sending limit is 12 times the number of your contacts. For example, with 60,000 subscribers, you can send up to 720,000 emails a month.

MailerLite vs tinyEmail

To compare MailerLite’s pricing, which is based on subscribers, with tinyEmail’s pricing, which depends on the number of emails sent, we need to think of a specific example. Let’s make up a fictional company. This will help us guess how many subscribers they might have and how many emails they send monthly.

We’ll look at different kinds of automated and regular emails that this company might use. We’ll also guess about the size of the company and how their customers act. This helps us understand better how much each platform might cost in a real-life situation.

Fictive scenario 1 [click to open for more information]

Company Profile

  • Business Type: Blogger
  • Reader Base: 1,000 subscribers

Email Marketing Strategy

  • Focused on building reader engagement and promoting content

Email Automation Types

  1. Welcome Email Series:
    • Series of 10 emails sent over 10 weeks to new subscribers.
    • Assume 5% growth in subscriber list per month (50 new subscribers).
    • Emails Sent: 500 per month (50 subscribers x 10 emails each).
  2. Newsletter Update Emails:
    • Regular updates about new blog posts.
    • Assume 1-2 new posts per week.
    • Emails Sent: 8 per month (2 per week).
  3. Reader Engagement Emails:
    • Triggered by specific reader actions like clicking a link in an email or not opening an email
    • Assume a 10% engagement rate.
    • Emails Sent: 100 per month (10% of 1,000).
  4. Affiliate Marketing or Promotion Emails:
    • Promote affiliate products or collaborations.
    • Assume one major campaign per month.
    • Emails Sent: 1,000 per month (to the entire email list).

Monthly Email Automation Summary:

  • Welcome Email Series: 500
  • Newsletter Update Emails: 8
  • Reader Engagement Emails: 100
  • Survey/Feedback Emails: 0 (not this month)
  • Affiliate Marketing/Promotion Emails: 1,000
  • Total: 1,608 emails per month

In Scenario 1, we have 1,000 subscribers sending a total of 1,608 emails per month, including automated ones.

The main difference between MailerLite’s Growing Business tier and tinyEmail is that MailerLite offers email automation, but tinyEmail does not. So, if you want email automation like in the fictional Scenario 1, tinyEmail isn’t the right choice. However, for regular emails like newsletters, tinyEmail works fine.

Regarding pricing, MailerLite’s Growing Business tier costs $15 monthly for up to 1,000 subscribers. Their pricing is based on the number of subscribers, and they allow unlimited monthly email sending.

For tinyEmail’s Standard plan, the cost to send up to 1,608 emails is also $15. tinyEmail doesn’t limit the number of subscribers at any level but charges based on the number of emails sent. Their lowest email package is for 15,000 emails per month, which costs $15.

Before we get into more examples for this price comparison, it’s important to note that email marketing is usually a long-term strategy. The prices we’re discussing are based on using these services for a year, including discounts for paying annually. MailerLite offers a 10% discount, while tinyEmail offers a 20% discount.

The horizontal line (X-axis) of the graph below represents both the number of subscribers and monthly emails. For example, it shows 5,000 subscribers (5K SUBS) and 5,000 monthly emails (5K MAIL). We do this because MailerLite’s pricing is based on the number of subscribers, while tinyEmail’s pricing depends on the number of emails sent.

In this graph, I’ve created 5 example scenarios:

  1. 5,000 subscribers and 5,000 emails per month (like sending one newsletter a month to your entire list).
  2. 5,000 subscribers and 20,000 emails per month (like sending weekly newsletters to your whole list).
  3. 10,000 subscribers and 10,000 emails per month (similar to one monthly newsletter to your entire list).
  4. 10,000 subscribers and 40,000 emails per month (a weekly newsletter to a list of 10,000 subscribers).
  5. 20,000 subscribers and 80,000 emails per month (a weekly newsletter to a list of 20,000 subscribers).
5K subs = 5,000 subscribers (MailerLite pricing) & 5K mail = 5,000 monthly email (tinyEmail pricing)

Findings

  • In all five scenarios we looked at, tinyEmail Standard is consistently the most affordable option.
  • However, in two out of the five scenarios, tinyEmail Pro turns out to be more expensive than both tiers of MailerLite. Remember, MailerLite offers many more features compared to tinyEmail.
  • If cost is a major factor for you, and you’re working with a limited budget and don’t need email automation, then tinyEmail Standard could be a good budget-friendly choice for newsletters.

The graph we discussed covers up to 20,000 subscribers and 80,000 emails per month, which is like sending a weekly newsletter.

A key point to remember is that the number of emails you send significantly affects the price. For example, the table below shows the cost for 100,000 subscribers sending 100,000 emails, i.e., a monthly newsletter. It also shows what you would pay for using this service over one, two, and three years. I included these longer-term prices to give you a broader view of the costs. While a few dollars difference might not seem much monthly, it can add up to thousands over several years. While I’m not saying that price is the only thing to consider when choosing an email marketing tool, it’s certainly an important factor.

The table below lists the prices for having 100,000 subscribers and sending 400,000 emails, which is like sending a weekly newsletter. When you compare this with the table above, you’ll notice a big difference. If you send more emails, the cost goes up, making tinyEmail more expensive.
