Below is a table showing the prices for Klaviyo’s first tier, called “Email.” It’s important to note that Klaviyo doesn’t offer an annual payment option or discounts for yearly purchases. In the fourth column, you’ll notice Klaviyo has a rule: you can send up to 10 times the number of emails as your total contacts each month. However, for the highest subscriber tiers, this multiplier is slightly lower, at 7.5X and 8X.

Fictive scenario 1

Comparing the prices of email marketing tools like Klaviyo and tinyEmail can be challenging. This is because Klaviyo’s pricing is based on the number of subscribers, while tinyEmail charges based on the number of emails sent. It’s a bit like comparing apples to oranges.

To fairly compare Klaviyo’s subscriber-based pricing and tinyEmail’s email-based pricing, we need to imagine a scenario. Let’s create a profile for a fictional, beginner-level e-commerce company. This will help us estimate their number of subscribers and the volume of emails they send each month.

We will consider various types of automated and regular emails this company might use. We’ll also make some guesses about the company’s size and how their customers behave. This way, we can get a clearer picture of the costs for each platform in a real-world situation.

Company Profile

  • Business Type: E-commerce startup
  • Product Range: Limited (around 10-20 different products)
  • Customer Base: Small but growing (1,000 subscribers to their email list)
  • Email Marketing Strategy: Just starting with automation

Email Automation Types

  1. Welcome Emails:
    • Sent to new email subscribers.
    • Assume 5% growth in subscriber list per month (50 new subscribers).
    • Emails Sent: 50 per month.
  2. Cart Abandonment Emails:
    • Triggered when a customer adds items to their cart but doesn’t complete the purchase.
    • Assume a 10% cart abandonment rate.
    • Average orders attempted per month: 200 (20% of the customer base).
    • Emails Sent: 20 per month (10% of 200).
  3. Birthday Discount Emails:
    • Sent on the customer’s birthday.
    • Assuming the customer base’s birthdays are evenly distributed throughout the year.
    • Emails Sent: Roughly 83 per month (1,000 customers / 12 months).
  4. Post-Purchase Follow-up Emails:
    • Sent after a customer makes a purchase.
    • Assume an average of 15% of the email list makes a purchase each month.
    • Emails Sent: 150 per month (15% of 1,000).

Regular emails (Seasonal or Promotional Emails)

  • Secial occasions, holidays, or promotional events.
  • Assume one major campaign per month.
  • Emails Sent: 1,000 per month (to the entire email list).

Monthly Email Automation Summary

  • Welcome Emails: 50
  • Cart Abandonment Emails: 20
  • Birthday Emails: 83
  • Post-Purchase Emails: 150
  • Regular Emails: 1,000
  • Total: 1,303 emails per month

Keep in mind, the actual numbers might change due to different factors, but this will give you a general idea of how it all works.

Price comparsion

Let’s look at the prices for Klaviyo and tinyEmail based on our fictional scenario.

The graph below shows monthly prices for different plans of both Klaviyo and tinyEmail. For Klaviyo, the price is based on having up to 1,000 subscribers. For tinyEmail, the price corresponds to sending about 1,303 emails per month, as their lowest plan allows for 15,000 emails monthly.

Winner: In this scenario tinyEmail Standard is cheaper than Klaviyo but tinyEmail’s Pro tier is more expensive than Klaviyo.

Warning: Remember, this comparison focuses only on the prices of these tools. While price is important, it shouldn’t be the only factor in your decision. Consider the features each tool offers and if they meet your needs. Keep in mind, Klaviyo, which started in 2012, offers way more features than tinyEmail, a newer player that began in 2022.

Fictive scenario 2

When you’re looking at prices, think about two main things: (1) how many people are subscribed to your emails, and (2) how many emails you’re planning to send out.

Let’s use our first scenario as an example. Imagine you send around 1.3 emails per subscriber each month. This includes both automated emails and a monthly newsletter to everyone who’s subscribed. If you switch to sending a weekly newsletter, your emails could go up from 1.3 to about 4.3 per subscriber every month. With 1,000 subscribers, this means you’d be sending between 4,000 and 5,000 emails a month.

Now, let’s consider a different example. Say you have 10,000 subscribers and you send one weekly newsletter plus a few automated emails (like in the example above). For a rough calculation, we multiply 10,000 subscribers by 4.3 to estimate the total monthly emails, which comes to 43,000.

Winner: Look at the graph below and you’ll see that Klaviyo costs more than tinyEmail. But remember, we explained earlier that tinyEmail doesn’t offer as many features as Klaviyo does. Also, Klaviyo allows up to 100,000 emails a month for the 10,000 subscriber plan, while tinyEmail lets you have unlimited subscribers for their 50,000 monthly email plan. It might seem a bit confusing, but that’s because these companies use different ways to set their prices, as we explained before.
